Fakewhale ALPHA presents 𝗔𝗡𝗢𝗡𝗬𝗠𝗜𝗭𝗘𝗗 by Iñigo Bilbao as its latest release: a series of ten unique 1/1 works developed from images of medical machines and CT scan data, transformed through AI-based image generation.

The series follows the path through which the medical environment turns the body into an image. A clinical machine prepares the encounter; a scan converts anatomy into radiological density; volumetric reconstruction and cinematic rendering give that data visual form; AI-based generation returns it as photorealistic presence.

Bilbao treats this sequence as a portrait system. The diagnostic object, the scanned body, and the reconstructed figure belong to the same operation of visibility, where identity is displaced into measurement, surface, artifact, and machine vision.

The result is a body of work in which the medical image becomes both subject and method: a way of seeing the body, and a way of exposing the technologies that make that vision possible.

In the CT-derived works, the process begins with axial slices of a scanned subject. Each pixel stores a value of X-ray attenuation measured in Hounsfield Units, translating air, tissue, bone, and metal into a scale of radiological density.

Those slices are stacked into a volumetric grid, rendered through clinical imaging software, then developed through cinematic visualization, physically modeled light, and advanced shading.

Bilbao uses these renders as reference material for an AI-based image generation model, allowing the medical image to return with photorealistic presence. Clinical data, volume, surface, and artificial image production converge in a single visual field.

Metal artifacts and air noise remain part of the work's material language. They mark the conditions of scanning and reconstruction, turning technical residue into a visible component of the final image.

The machine-based images give form to the physical threshold that precedes the scan. The scanner, the examination structure, and the clinical chamber appear as frontal presences, removed from everyday medical function and held inside an empty field.

Their role is architectural and psychological. They organize exposure, stillness, anticipation, and dependence before the body is translated into data. The hollow center, metallic surface, cables, and dark interior become the visual grammar of a system built to examine what ordinary sight cannot reach.

Through this shift, the machine enters the series as more than an instrument. It becomes the condition of portraiture itself: the structure that makes the anonymized image possible before any face or figure returns.

Across 𝗔𝗡𝗢𝗡𝗬𝗠𝗜𝗭𝗘𝗗, the portrait moves from the face to the system that produces visibility. The body appears through density, reconstruction, clinical surface, and photorealistic return, while the machine remains present as the architecture that made that return possible.

This is where the series locates its critical force. Medical imaging promises precision, but its images also remove the body from ordinary recognition. Bilbao holds that contradiction open, producing works in which the subject is visible through the very technologies that anonymize it.

Iñigo Bilbao lives and works in Barcelona, Spain. He specializes in 3D imaging, 3D scanning, and experimental medical imaging, and has worked with laser scanners, medical scanners, X-ray systems, and electron microscopes.

His practice has long explored the relationship between art, science, and technology. His recent experimentation with AI-generated imagery has moved his work closer to the territories of science fiction and horror. His work has been exhibited internationally at Ars Electronica, Transmediale, MIMA Museum, and LABoral.
